Here’s a progression recommended by Jenkins, Brewer, and Mansour that will help you work up to ab wheel rollouts.

The first two moves are bodyweight exercises, the third requires an exercise ball, and the fourth and fifth require an ab wheel.

Walkout

The first move is called the walkout. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Hold your arms out in front of you, palms facing in. Roll back, then extend your arms as far as they can go, with your elbows locked out. Then, slowly lower your body toward the floor.

Lunge

The next move is called the lunge. Start by standing up straight with your feet shoulder-width apart. Bend your knees slightly and step forward with one foot, placing it flat on the ground. Next, take a deep breath and raise your right leg so that your heel is lifted off the ground. Keep your left foot on the ground. Slowly lower your right knee until it is bent at 90 degrees. Then, slowly raise your right leg back to the starting position. Repeat with the other leg.

Squat

The next move is called the squat. Start by standing up straight with your feet shoulder-width apart. Bend your knees slightly and place your hands on your hips. Take a deep breath and squat down as low as you can.

Stand

The next move is called the stand. Stand up straight with your feet shoulder-width apart. Hold your arms out in front of you, palms facing in. Roll back, then extend your arms as far as they can go, with your elbows locked out. Then, slowly lower your body toward the floor.

Ab Wheel Rollouts

Now, you are ready to start using it. It’s important to make sure that the ab wheel you buy is the right size for you. The wheel should be big enough to allow you to roll it over your stomach without straining your back. You should also be able to roll it easily. If you need to use two hands to roll it, it’s not big enough. Start by sitting on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you. Put one foot on the edge of the ab wheel, and roll it backward so that it touches the floor. Then, slowly roll it forward until your leg is fully extend. Next, bring the leg back toward the starting position. Repeat with the other leg.
